Jan. 18, 2025 Dear Friends, The National Weather Service predicts extremely cold weather starting on Sunday night and stretching through most of the week. Temperatures will remain below freezing from Monday through Thursday with highs not exceeding 20 degrees on some days. Please check on your neighbors and on neighboring properties, if possible. There’s a great risk of frozen pipes, and thermostat settings in unoccupied homes should be above 65 degrees. Some other advice for protecting against frozen pipes includes: · Let heat reach pipes: Open cabinet doors or find other ways to vent heat toward pipes, particularly the ones that run along exterior walls. · Leave water running: For pipes that run along exterior walls leave water running. Even a stream the width of a pencil point can help prevent pipes from freezing solid. · Seal crawlspaces: Close access doors tight to the area underneath homes. Temporarily insulate flood vents to keep air and wind from entering. If you notice burst pipes at any property in town, please call the non-emergency police number at 609-399-9111. For their own safety and well-being, remember to bring pets inside. Here are emergency contact numbers for local utility companies: · Atlantic City Electric: 800-833-7476 · South Jersey Gas: 888-766-9900 · Comcast Cable: 800-COMCAST (800-266-2278) · New Jersey American Water: 800-272-1325 For Police and Fire Department emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call police at 609-399-9111 or City Hall at 609-399-6111. I will update you again if there are any further NWS notifications. In the meantime, you can check for updates at www.ocnj.us. We will continue to use our emergency notification systems if necessary. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor |
