Dear Friends, Ocean City trash and recycling collection will continue on its normal schedule. Gold Medal Environmental has been under contract to provide trash and recyclable pickup for Ocean City for the past four years at about $1.5 million annually. With less than a year remaining on a five-year contract, Gold Medal has demanded that Ocean City pay an additional $1.4 million for the balance of 2022 or it will refuse to honor the contract. The company issued a news release Friday stating that it would cease recycling pickup as of Monday, if this demand is not met. Gold Medal is employing similar tactics with other municipalities in Cape May County. North Wildwood terminated its contract with Gold Medal yesterday. Other towns, including Ocean City, are contemplating similar actions depending upon Gold Medal's actions. Ocean City fully expects the company to uphold its contract and will continue to pursue good-faith negotiations. However, we are prepared for the possibility that Gold Medal could breach the agreement. We are ready to provide uninterrupted trash and recycling services through a combination of shared services with Sea Isle City and contracted services with vendors outside Gold Medal. Warm regards, Jay A, Gillian |
