City of Ocean City, NJ - Office of Emergency Management Special Weather Statement: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2021 The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch in effect for Ocean City from Wednesday morning (Sept. 1) through Thursday afternoon (Sept. 2). The remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to move across our area during that period, and 2 to 4 inches of rain are predicted with greater amounts possible in localized pockets. The NWS also warns that severe thunderstorms with strong wind gusts are possible in our region. At this time, the heaviest rainfall is expected to arrive late Wednesday afternoon and continue into the night. Tidal flooding is not predicted during this storm, but high tides (which can limit stormwater drainage) will be at 4:33 p.m. Wednesday and 5:15 a.m. Friday. Street flooding conditions could be similar to what Ocean City experienced on Sunday, when about 4 inches of rain fell in a span of 4 hours. Residents and visitors should be prepared to monitor conditions and to move vehicles if necessary. All municipal parking lots (surface lots and metered lots) will be open for free safe parking. The parking will be free starting on Wednesday and will be available for the duration of the storm. Please be aware that while these lots will offer a safe spot, flooding may block access to them during the storm. Driveways and street parking near mid-block are safer, if those options are available. Parking also will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora. For your safety and the protection of your vehicle and neighboring properties, never attempt to drive through flood waters, and do not drive around barricades. The city will urge all motorists to stay off flooded streets at all times. Sunday’s conditions were made much worse by many vehicles plowing through flood waters and creating damaging wakes. For Police & Fire Department emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 609-399-9111. |
