The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) is replacing/rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue; and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street.
Work for Feb. 10-17: As of the end of the day Friday (2/07/20), the contractor will have installed PVC pipe, backfilled and temporary paved from the southern terminus of the project on 31st Street up to 15th Street. There was a pit dug on 31st Street between Simpson and Haven avenues. The purpose of the pit is to provide access to the existing 20" and 12" DIP lines so that tie-in connections can be made. The pit will be there for approximately three (3) months to accommodate the schedule for the completion of all other pipe work and the delivery of tie-in equipment (valves, wet taps, couplings, line stops). In the meantime, the pit will be secured with temporary fencing and covered with a steel plate. On Monday (2/10/20), one of the contractor's crews will start at 15th Street and proceed to install new PVC pipe going northward. The contractor's second crew will be excavating a second access pit between 8th and 9th Streets.
For the weekend (2/8/20 – 2/9/20), Bay Avenue will be open to two lanes of traffic with lane shifts around stored materials and equipment primarily north of 15th Street. 31st Street is closed to traffic between Simpson and Haven Avenues. Next week, Bay Avenue will be closed between 24th and 14th Streets, except for local traffic. It is expected that this traffic pattern will be in place for one to two more work weeks. Bay Avenue will be completely closed between 8th and 9th streets until all the necessary tie-ins are made.
In the area of the Middle School, there may be some work done on the property of the CMCMUA's Pump Station at 20th & Bay late next week. However, such work is not expected to significantly impact traffic in the area. As such, the police traffic directors that had been stationed at 18th and 20th Streets have been removed.
