Fire Prevention FAQ

The Division of Fire Prevention performs inspections to certify the installation, maintenance, and testing of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and portable fire extinguishers, as required. Certification is required for all residential rental units in one- and two-family dwellings and for the sale or transfer of title of residential units in one- and two-family dwellings, and individually owned condo units in multiple dwellings.

Inspections are available 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays. All inspections must be done in-person. Self-certifications are no longer being accepted. To schedule an inspection, please use the forms provided below, call 609-399-6111 ext. 9727, and/or email smokedetector@ocnj.us with any questions.
