Drainage Improvements Planned Throughout Ocean City

Ocean City, NJ– City Council approved a contract last Thursday with Coastal Marine Piling, Inc. for $230,000 to install 14 tide check valves in various locations throughout the City. This work should be completed by the summer.

As a barrier community, Ocean City faces significant challenges in mitigating flooding caused by periodic high tides and storm surges. Drainage systems are not always equipped with a means to prevent the backflow of rising waters into the system, as these tidal waters will flow into the stormwater pipes and spill out on to the streets through the grates, inundating the intersections creating inconveniences and safety hazards to the public. In order to prevent this tidal flooding, the City has historically installed tide check valves at or near the ends of the bayside at the backbay outfalls.

Last year, the City authorized Hatch Mott McDonald to conduct a thorough inspection of the condition of the existing tide check valves and provide a report containing their findings.
