Ocean City Continues to Promote ADA Accessibility
Ocean City, New Jersey – Ocean City has made major steps in the past few years to insure access throughout the island for those with physical challenges.
Last week City Council authorized a contract with Marandino Construction to install no less than 50 intersection ramps in the neighborhood preservation area (2nd to 15th street) and another 35 north of 2nd Street.
Mayor Sal Perillo stated, “The City has made a commitment to provide easy access for those with disabilities from the Bay to the Beach. There has been an outpouring of support for this effort so we have accelerated the completion of these improvements.”
In 2009 over forty curb cuts were put in place at various intersections to meet ADA requirements. Beach ramps were also installed at 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th Streets from the Boardwalk. These improvements are totally funded by federal grant funds.
On the south end of the island the Ocean City Public Works Department installed five beach ramps in 2009 and plans to complete additional ramps in this area as time permits.
Another major access improvement is underway at the Moorlyn Terrace entrance to the boardwalk. This is being funded by a Community Development Block Grant.
City Administrator Jim Rutala noted, “We are fortunate to have grant funding to provide these needed improvements.”
